Professor Mattina earned a Ph.D. degree from University of Hawaii in 1973. He is a linguist who served as director of the Linguistics Program for many years. His research on Salish languages and his tireless editorship of the UMOPL, The University of Montana Occasional Papers in Linguistics, represent lasting contributions to the field, work that continues under the auspices of the Whatcom Museum (meltr.org/SRF.htm).
