Professor Bessac is a social anthropologist whose interest is Asia, especially China. He earned his Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin in 1963, and conducted fieldwork in Inner Asia and Taiwan. In 2006, well into his retirement, Professor Bessac published Death on the Chang Tang Tibet, 1950: The Education of an Anthropologist, in the UM Contributions to Archaeology Monograph Series, #11, giving him the opportunity to present the famous story of his 1950 trek through Tibet.
