Anthropology Major

Requirements

The major in Anthropology requires 36 credits in Anthropology and Linguistics, with a grade of a C (2.00) or better, including:

  • 12 credits in core courses  (ANTY 210N, 220E, 250S, and 270S (or LING 470);
  • 3 credits in statistics (ANTY 401, M 241, PSYX 220, or SOCI 202),
  • 6 credits from sub-area I (Theory and Methods), specifically
    • 3 credits in Theory  (ANTY 312, 400, 403E, 404, 415, 430, 450, 456, 458, LING 472)
    • 3 credits in Methods (ANTY 402, 408, 412, 413, 416, 431, 451, 454, 455, 466, LING 475)
  • 6 credits from Sub-Areas II, III, or IV, (two 3 credit courses from different groups)
    • Sub-Area II (ANTY 122Y, 133H, 211N, 227, 310, 333, 388, 417, 418, 426)
    • Sub-Area III (ANTY 141H, 241, 243, 244, 251H, 254H, 323X, 330X, 345, 347, 351H, 352X, 353, 354H, 442, 457, 459, 465X, 494)
    • Sub-Area IV (311, 326E, 336, 349, 427, 428, 440H, 385, 411, 422, 423, 435, LING 470, 473,474, 476, 477, 479, 484, 489, NASX 306X)
  • 12 credits of electives in anthropology, linguistics or approved cognate courses, as well as the upper division writing expectation in the major, which can be met either by an upper division (W) writing course from the approved list in the catalog, or one of the following: ANTY 314, 400, 402, 408, 440H, 450, 451, or 455, LING 473, or 484.

Options

Archaeolgy

A student must complete all general requirements for the major, including:

  • 9 credits in core courses, one in each of the following three groups:
    • Area: ANTY 351H, 352X, 353, 354H, 465X, 451, 457, 459.
    • Theory: ANTY 450, 456, 458.
    • Methods: ANTY 454, 455, 466, 467, or any archaeological field school,
  • 6 credits  in one of the following allied disciplines: biology, geography, geosciences; and
  • 6 credits  in one of the following allied disciplines: computer sciences, environmental sciences, forestry, history, mathematical sciences, or Native American studies.

Cultural & Ethnic Diversity

A student must complete all general requirements for the major, including

  • 12 credits in core courses (ANTY 122Y, 310, 330X, and 423)
  • 6 credits in one of the following disciplines: anthropology, history or sociology, and
  • 6 upper division credits in one of the following allied disciplines: African American Studies, Central & Southwest Asian Studies, East Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Native American Studies, South & Southeast Asian Studies, or Women's & Gender Studies.

Forensic Anthropology

A student must complete all general requirements for the major, including:

  • ANTH 286H, ANTY 310, 314, 412 or 413,
  • SOCI 211S or 221.

Linguistic Anthropology

A student must complete all general requirements for the major and in addition, complete:

  • LING 470 and 473,
  • two classes from the following: LING 375X, 472, 474, 475, 476, 477, 478, 484, or 489. 

Medical Anthropology

A student must complete all general requirements for the major including:

  • ANTY 426
  • any three courses: ANTY 333, 336, 388, 418, 422, or 435.
