Linguistics
This option is designed for students who wish to pursue the studies of linguistics, languages, or linguistic analysis within an anthropological framework. Specialties of the program include several Native American languages in the region, language preservation, and English as a second language.
There are several paths to studying linguistics at The University of Montana - Missoula. Students have the opportunity to specialize in Linguistics in anthropology by pursuing the B.A. degree in Anthropology with a Linguistics Option, or by pursing the M.A. degree in Anthropology with a Linguistics Option. Language retention among indigenous peoples can be considered part of Cultural Heritage and students interested in studying these subjects may pursue the M.A. degree in Anthropology with an option in Cultural Heritage or the Ph.D. degree in Cultural Heritage and Applied Anthropology. Outside of anthropology, the Linguistics Program, part of the Anthropology Department, offers a M.A. degree in Linguistics with several options. Finally, undergraduate students interested in connecting Linguistics with English literature and teaching, the English Department offers an option in Linguistics at the B.A. level.
