Faculty Computer Distribution 2009
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Can you tell me what the configuration will be for each possible choice? (PC/Mac, Desktop/Laptop)
Answer: No because the choices determine how much we can spend on each unit. There is always a difference between the cost of PCs and Macs and a difference between the cost of desktops and laptops. Once we know how many of each to order we can begin to determine what configurations we can afford. We try to maintain an equitable balance in the amount spent on each unit while providing a desktop laser printer and a USB external hard drive with every unit. The PC or Mac will be configured to backup to the external hard drive.
Q2: When will my computer arrive?
Answer: We are given our allocation at the beginning of the Fiscal Year. At that point we begin soliciting quotes from manufacturers and fine tuning configurations based on our spending limits. We are ready to begin purchasing by late July or early August. Manufacturing and delivery take about two weeks and we’re ready to start delivery and set up by mid-August. It’s not uncommon for some computer variations to be immediately available while others require more time, and it’s impossible to predict how that will evolve. Let Griztech know if you will be on campus in early August and we may be able to expedite delivery and setup of your computer. Please keep in mind that new faculty members have priority.
Q3: What happens to my old computer?
Answer: Your department’s system administrator or Griztech will transfer your files and settings from your old computer to your new computer. Once you are comfortable that everything has been moved successfully, the hard drive on your old computer will be erased. The old computer remains the property of UM and can be utilized for adjuncts, visiting faculty, lecturers, graduate students, part-time staff or instructors, or for the replacement pool maintained by Griztech.
Q4: Where can I get a copy of the laptop agreement and why is it required if I want a laptop?
Answer: The laptop agreement is available for download as a .pdf file (Click here). The agreement is required because laptops are routinely taken off campus and susceptible to theft, loss or damage.
