Gerald Fetz has been Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences since July 2003. A faculty member in German Studies at UM since 1970, he also served previously as Chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures and as Dean of the Davidson Honors College. He has taught broadly in the various fields of German language, literature, and culture, as well as across several interdisciplinary areas in the humanities. His research interests have focused largely on 20th Century German writers and topics (Thomas Bernhard, Martin Walser, W.G. Sebald, Literature about and from the Holocaust, German literature of the “Wende (1989),” and the relationship between History and Literature).
On campus he has served as Chair of the Faculty Senate and the International Committee, the Research and Creative Activities Committee and the UM Accreditation Task Force; off campus he has served as Chair of the Montana Committee for the Humanities, as President of the Missoula Cultural Council, and on the Executive Boards of the Institute for Medicine and Humanities (currently), the German Studies Association (currently), the National Federation of State Humanities Councils, and the American Association of Teachers of German. Among the awards Dean Fetz has received are UM’s Distinguished Teacher Award, UM’s Distinguished Service to International Education Award, and the UM Administrative Service Award. He has also held a Visiting Fulbright Professorship at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, an NEH Fellowship, and a German Academic Exchange Fellowship, and a research fellowship from the American Philosophical Society. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in German Studies from the University of Oregon,, his B.A. from Pacific Lutheran University, and also studied at the Universities of Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Munich.
