- The University of Montana's writing program began formally in 1966 with the establishment of the Master of Fine Arts degree, and has since been shaped and influenced by the likes of Richard Hugo, Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Leslie Fiedler and Kate Gadbow, among others.
- Today the Program is nourished by a talented, committed, and accomplished group of faculty-writers, as well as by an increasingly distinguished community of alumni. Together with the talents and accomplishments of our current students, this community is continuing the Master of Fine Arts program as one of the oldest and most prestigious programs in the country.
- Committed to the integrated study of literature and creative writing, the writing program prepares writers to teach a variety of courses at the college level. Program graduates have published widely and successfully; many teach or work in publishing across the country. The University of Montana is a member of the Associated Writing Programs (AWP). Prageeta Sharma currently serves as Director of the Creative Writing Program
