We provide students with a solid background in the history of film, as well as the theoretical sophistication necessary to identify the philosophical, political and aesthetic commitments expressed by key directors, movements and genres.
Specific courses provide study in national cinemas (e.g., American, French, German, Russian and Japanese), directors (e.g., Bergman, Kubrick, Tarantino and the Cohens), and genres (e.g., Noir, Western, Crime, and War). Several courses (including Shakespeare and Film) focus on filmic adaptations of literary works. Film Studies also offers a documentary production course that is cross-listed with Media Arts.
It is recommended that all students take the Introduction to Film course before enrolling in other courses.
