Chemistry Scholarships

Leland M. Yates Outstanding Teaching Assistant

Criteria: A minimum cash award of $1,000 to a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Chemistry who has been particularly attentive to other students he/she is assisting.  An appropriate committee appointed by the Chair in the Department of Chemistry shall select the recipient. If there is no qualified graduate student to receive the award, then the earnings shall be reinvested.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $1,600

Dr. Richard H. Jesse Family Scholarship

Criteria: Chemistry student at The University of Montana who demonstrated academic excellence in the previous year as a declared chemistry major.  The recipient must be a Montana resident.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $5,300

John D. Sullivan Chemistry Scholarship

Criteria: One or more promising UM chemistry students who have completed their sophomore year and are beginning their junior year.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $700

Sam and Nelly Maclay Award

Criteria: Student who shows unusual promise in journalism, chemistry or the Division of Biological Sciences.  This award is to be rotated from year to year among those three majors.  The recipient shall be determined by the department that has the rotation in a given year.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $300

Stanley R. Ames Scholarship

Criteria: Graduate student at The University of Montana majoring in chemistry.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - Approximately $900

William P. Cahill Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: A sophomore or above at The University of Montana.  The recipient must be dedicated to chemistry, must be selected on high academic standards and scholastic standing and financial need is to be considered, in that order.  One award is to be given each year using combined funds from this account and the Cahill Agency Account.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $600

Lola Walsh Anacker Scholarship

Criteria: A female graduate student in chemistry.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $500

Julius and Anna Wiegenstein Scholarship in Chemistry

Criteria: A chemistry major at The University of Montana who is a deserving student.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $800

Eugene Davis Opportunity Fund

Criteria: Deserving chemistry majors.  Recipients must have graduated from a Montana high school. 

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $600

R. Keith Osterheld and Jean Osterheld Fund

Criteria: Recipients must be working toward a master's or doctoral degree in chemistry.  Support can be rendered in the form of teaching assistantships, internships, research assistantships, scholarships, a combination of any or all of these, or other types of support as determined by the chair of the Department of Chemistry.

Philip and Sandra Barney Scholarship

Criteria: Deserving undergraduate students who are studying chemistry at The University of Montana, with a preference for Montana residents and a preference for students with a pre-medical science emphasis.  The recipients thereof shall be determined by an appropriate committee appointed by the Chair of the Chemistry Department.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $800
