Division of Biological Sciences Scholarships

Alaback/Brewer Melipal Research Award: International Research Plant in Conservation Biology and Education

Criteria: One award will be given annually for an extended international research study (any country but preference for Patagonia and Latin America) for students in the College of Arts and Sciences or College of Forestry and Conservation with a research interest in plant conservation biology, sustainable development of forestry resources, and ecology education. Highest priority will be given to graduate students, but advanced undergraduates are encouraged to apply. The award can be used for travel and per-diem expenses for extended study, but is not to be used to attend a short conference or course. The award will support studies related to 1) conservation biology and ecology of plant species and communities (including forests), and 2) conservation education to bring the science of ecology of this region to the public. Applications that propose to integrate science with educational outreach are especially encouraged. Students should submit applications to the College of Arts and Sciences. A selection committee appointed by the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to include an equal number of faculty members from the College of Forestry and Conservation and the Division of Biological Sciences will determine the award recipient.
