Military Science Scholarships

Mrs. K Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Cadet in the ROTC Program of Military Science at The University of Montana.  The recipient must be entering at least his/her junior year and must have a record of service to the ROTC Program and to other cadets.  Further, the recipient should have a grade point average of at least 3.0.  If no qualified applicant is identified in a particular year, the award may be carried forward to the next year so that there is the possibility of more than one scholarship being given of $1,000 each in a single year.

Scholarship Amount: $1,000 unless scholarship funds are carried over from a previous year.

Colonel Sam A. and Kathleen A. Roberts Military Science Fund

Criteria: Deserving students enrolled in the ROTC program in the Department of Military Science.  Recipients must be full-time students and have a grade point average of at least 2.5.  Selection will be made by an appropriate committee appointed by the chair of the Department of Military Science.

The number of awards and award amounts may vary in response to the needs of the students deemed particularly promising.  The scholarships can be used to offset tuition, fees, books, room and/or board.

Frank W. Milburn Memorial - Silver Sabre Award

Criteria: The purpose of the Frank W. Milburn Memorial is to award a scholarship within the men or women's UM intercollegiate sports program, and a memorial silver sabre award within the UM ROTC program.

The criteria for the scholarship gives preference to a junior student recipient, however, the student may be a sophomore, senior or graduate student at UM.  In any case, the student must be making progress toward a degree and should be a member of a recognized varsity team.  Selection will be based upon leadership, scholarship, aptitude, sportsmanship, athletic ability and character.

The criteria for the silver sabre award gives preference to a junior student recipient, however, the student may be a sophomore, senior or graduate student at UM.  In any case, the student must be making progress toward a degree and should be enrolled in the advance course ROTC program.  The means an individual has to be a MS 111, MS IV cadet.  Selection will be based upon leadership, scholarship, military aptitude, sportsmanship, athletic ability and character.

Award is a Silver Sabre.

Colonel Tom and Frances Davis Scholarship

Criteria: Junior or senior enrolled in the ROTC Military Science Program at the University of Montana.  Recipient must exhibit academic excellence and cannot be the recipient of an Army ROTC Scholarship.  The award is renewable.  A committee appointed by the Professor of Military Science will determine the recipients each year. 

A plaque for each of the top male and female advanced-course cadets (two awards) who exhibit both academic achievement and excellent physical fitness in the ROTC Military Science Program.

Amount: Varies - approximately $500

Colonel Sam A. and Kathleen A. Roberts Scholarship

Criteria:Deserving cadet enrolled in The University of Montana ROTC Program.  The recipient must meet the following criteria:

  • be a graduate of Loyola-Sacred Heart High School in Missoula with a desire for a military career;
  • be recommended by the high school principal;
  • be a full-time student and approved by the professor of Military Science; and
  • have demonstrated qualities of honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service.

If an applicant from Loyola-Sacred Heart High School is not identified, then an applicant, eligible under the same criteria, may be nominated by the principal of Helena High School.  If no applicant is identified from either Loyola or Helena High Schools, then the recipient shall be determined by the professor of Military Science.

Scholarship is renewable, provided the student reapplies, has demonstrated good progress in his/her academic work, maintains physical fitness and is approved by the professor of Military Science.

Scholarship Amount: Varies - approximately $400

Colonel Raymond Lewis ROTC Scholarship

Criteria: Deserving ROTC cadet who is enrolled full time at The University of Montana.  The selected cadet will receive the Lewis/Davis Sabre, named after Col. Lewis and Col. Thomas Davis, his lifetime friend. 

The award can be used to offset tuition, fees, books, room, board and/or any other related educational expenses. A silver sabre will also be awarded each year. Scholarship award varies. Contact department. A silver saber will also be awarded annually.

Colonel Raymond Lewis/Butte High School Scholarship

Scholarship Amount: Approximately $600

Criteria: Student enrolled in The University of Montana's Military Science Program.  The recipient must demonstrate a strong desire to complete the program.  Preference shall be given to a graduate of Butte High School who meets the above requirements, but if no one is qualified then a student from elsewhere may be considered.
