Political Science Scholarships

Susan K. Grebeldinger Scholarship

Criteria: Undergraduate or graduate student with a political science major or minor with preference to one who has a career or scholarly interest in legal studies.  However, this is not available to a law student or other professional student.

Candidates must submit a strong writing sample with a legal emphasis, carry an excellent grade point average, and be a full-time UM student through the year of the award.

Scholarship Amount: $1,000

James P. and Margaret B. Brennan Scholarship

Criteria: Student studying political science at The University of Montana.

Amount: Varies - Approximately $800

E. Paul Sliter Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Recipient must be a junior or senior, must have participated in community service and must have demonstrated political involvement.  The number of scholarship awards to be given in any one year shall be one or two that are more meaningful in size rather than several smaller awards.  The recipients shall be determined by a Scholarship Selection Committee made up of the Chair and at least one other faculty member, both from the Political Science Department, as well as Elaine Sliter or her appointee.

Amount: Varies - Approximately $2,700

Thomas Payne Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Political science major who is an upper division student (junior, senior or higher).

Amount: Varies - approximately $1,300

Maud and Grover Waldron Scholarship

Criteria: A junior, senior or graduate student majoring in political science or public administration.  Preference is given to undergraduates and to applicants who express a career interest in state and/or local government.  The recipient's political science grade point average must be at least 3.40.

Amount: Varies - approximately $500

Alan D. Robertson Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Political science major who is a sophomore, junior or senior at The University of Montana.  The recipient must be a Montana high school graduate, carry a grade point average of 3.0 or above and have demonstrated leadership activities on campus or in the community.

Amount: Varies - approximately $600

Anthony "Tony" Allen Newberry (Doohan) Scholarship

Criteria: Political science major with an interest in international studies.  The recipient must have demonstrated academic achievement.  It is a preference that a different student receives this award each year.

Amount: Varies - approximately $500

H. David and Joyce E. Hunt Public Policy Scholarship

Criteria: Annual scholarship of $2,500 that is to be awarded to help recruit and retain students in the College of Arts and Sciences that are interested in a career that emphasizes local government, public administration and policymaking.
The recipient shall be enrolled in the College Arts and Sciences, and be majoring in Political Science.

  1. At the time of application, the recipient shall have junior standing.
  2. The recipient shall have an interest in local government public administration and policy making.
  3. The recipient shall be selected on the basis of (a) academic achievement as indicated on the transcript(s) presented, (b) financial need as established by the UM Financial Aid Office, and (c) attitude (work ethic) and interest in public administration and policy making, as established in a short essay and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member of the Political Science Department.
  4. The selected recipient is required to maintain a 3.25 or better grade point average during the award year to remain qualified for the scholarship. In addition, the recipient must remain in good standing with the policies and conditions set forth by The University of Montana.
  5. A candidate list will be generated from applications for the Hunt Public Policy Scholarship and submitted to the Department of Political Science. The list of students (which will be ranked by G.P.A.) with essays, shall be forwarded to the Donors for review. A recipient shall be selected by the Political Science Scholarship Committee based on the above criteria, in consultation with the Donors
