Internships Report #3

Communication 398

Report #3

Overview: Each report will contain three parts: an update on your activities, a link to concepts from communication studies and a career development component.

Length: Approximately 5-6 pages (double spaced, 12 point font)

For this report please do the following:

1. Review. Describe what you have been doing at your internship since your last report. What kinds of activities have you been doing? What kinds of challenges have you encountered? (1 page)

2. Rhetoric and Public Discourse. Consider some/all of the following:
Describe the different kinds of communication that take place between the organization and external audiences (advertising, public relations, advocacy, customer interaction, etc.). How does the organization encourage certain types of messages or styles of interaction? What sort of training does the organization provide to help its members interact with external audiences?
How does the organization attempt to shape its public image? Who are the main audiences? Compare the metaphors and narratives used by the organization in communicating with external audience with those used inside the organization. What are the similarities and differences?(3 pages)

3. Career. Research careers opportunities related to your internship. The purpose of this part of the assignment is to get you thinking about some careers and actually doing some research--the kind that you will be doing when you look for a job after college. Start by going online and exploring some of the career search web sites that are out there (Google: "Career Search" for starters). There are also resources available through Career Services (located in Lodge 154 with Internship Services) to further your career search. In addition, there are government web sites online that can provide statistical information about particular careers. Try to find out the following: What is it like to work in this particular career? What are the starting salaries like? What kind of schooling/experience is necessary to get a job in this field? What is the outlook for future employment in this field? Where are the best jobs in this field located?

Write a one to two page summary of what you discovered about one particular career.

Please remember not to provide personal information about yourself (social security numbers, bank accounts, etc) to any of the online sites you visit.
