Professional Information:

Art is a "recovering litigator" having spent almost 20 years in the courtroom. He served as a 3AGC Captain in the U. S. Army, including a tour in Vietnam as trial counsel, followed by service with the Madn County California District Attorney and private practice in San Rafael, California. His background in alternative forms of dispute resolution began as a court-appointed arbitrator and pro-tern Superior Court judge in California conducting settlement conferences.

He and his wife Kitty left California in 1990 and currently run Montana Mediators, a private mediation and training practice. In addition, he is a co-founder and the current executive director of the Community Mediation Center of Missoula, and an adjunct faculty member of the University of Montana's School of Law. Art teaches family law mediation and special topics in mediation. He directs the School of Law's Mediation Clinic, which provides six third-year law students with "hands on" mediation experience.

Art has developed his mediation skills through course work at Pepperdine University's Strauss Center for Dispute Resolution, CDR in Boulder, Colorado, and the Harvard Negotiation Project.

Art and Kitty enjoy the outdoors, with snowshoing and sea kayacking being their latest adventures. Art has three daughters, Sarah, Hillary, and Hollis.
