Professional Information:

Bill’s recent work has focused on Innovation and Value Creation in all types of organizations--corporate, small businesses, educational, and non-profit.  He is co-author with Curt Carlson, CEO of SRI International, of Innovation: The Five Disciplines for Creating What Customers Want (Crown Business Publisher, 2006).  SRI brought the world the computer mouse, hypertext, robotic surgery, malaria drugs, and HDTV among other important innovations. The book details the process used by SRI that any organization can use to innovate and create customer value.  Bill is on a multidisciplinary team that has developed and taught these disciplines to the BBC, NTT (Japan Telephone and Telegraph), the prominent high-tech research institute of Taiwan, ITRI, Danish Radio and Television, Swisscom, and many U.S. clients as well.

One of Bill’s enduring interests is conflict management, mediation and facilitation, especially working with intact or virtual work teams. He is one of a handful of people certified by the Association of Conflict Resolution as an “advanced practitioner.”  He has an active consulting practice helping people in the workplace move toward more productive relationships with one another. He is currently director of the Collaboration Institute (www.collaborationinstitute.com) with four former students, and is a Senior Associate with the Yarbrough Group bringing training on organizational development and mediation to Germany, Spain, Singapore, England, France, Belgium and South Africa.  Bill is widely known for his work on conflict management via his well-regarded co-authored book Interpersonal Conflict (McGraw-Hill, 7th Edition, 2007).  The communication profession can’t seem to get rid of him, as he has three co-authored books in process. You, Me & Us: An Introduction to Interpersonal Communication with Bill Todd-Mancillas and Sandra Metts will be available 2007, A revision of Relational Communication is currently underway with Steve Yoshimura of this department to be published by Lawrence Erlbaum & Associates, and Roy Andes and Bill are completing a manuscript of a book tentatively entitled, From Me to We: Unleashing the Hidden Power of Identity and Relationship..

As you can tell, though he is officially retired, he has really just opened spaces to do more of the work that he loves—conducting workshops, helping others move to better work relationships, and writing books about innovation, communication, conflict, mediation, and personal relationships.

Bill is an avid outdoorsman, having almost too many recreational pursuits.  Given his interests and years in the woods and since he used to be a Ranger for the National Park Service, he is an excellent source of information on Yellowstone & Glacier Parks and many Montana wilderness areas.
