PCOM Major
Students wishing to become COMM majors must first enroll as PCOM majors. The PCOM major is designed to ensure that students have a good foundation in lower-division COMM courses prior to enrolling as a major and taking upper-division (i.e., 300- and 400-level) courses. To become a COMM major, please be mindful of the following:
General Information
- You must take COMM 111 or its equivalent, two other lower-division COMM courses, and have 16 University Credits to become a COMM major.
- While PCOM, you are not eligible to take upper-division courses in COMM
- Try to take other required courses for the major while you are PCOM. These include:
- COMM 110 Introduction to Interpersonal Communication
- COMM 230 Introduction to Organizational Communication
- COMM 250 Introduction to Rhetorical Theory
- Also, try to take M 115 or its equivalent. This course is a pre-requisite for the various statistics courses that fulfill the major requirement. COMM majors are eligible to use this sequence to fulfill the Symbolic Systems requirement for General Education.
- Students must earn a minimum grade of C- in the three lower-division courses before being admitted to COMM.
Moving from PCOM to COMM
- While PCOM, you will be advised through the Undergraduate Advising Center in Lommasson 269. (243-2835, http://www.umt.edu/uac/)
- During the semester that you are finishing your PCOM requirements, you should make your advising appointment with Steve Schwarze, Chair of COMM (x4293). He will sign your change-of-major form, and help you select appropriate courses and a permanent advisor.
- Once you have completed your PCOM requirements, you should select your own COMM faculty advisor. Simply stop by during a faculty member’s office hours or make an appointment. Sheets will be posted outside the advisor’s door during the pre-registration advising period.
- Please bring your advising folder (located in the filing cabinet in the COMM Department office in LA 301), a copy of your transcripts, and a preliminary course schedule to your advising appointment
Transfer Students
- Students needing a transcript evaluation should see the Transfer Coordinator. For 2010-11 this is Alan Sillars (LA 345). Bring an unofficial UM transcript and any syllabi from courses you completed at other schools.
