Economics Scholarships & Awards

All Economics scholarships are awarded in early April. Application forms are available in the Economics Department office (LA 407).

Martin & Rhoda Farris Scholarship

The Martin & Rhoda Farris Scholarship provides an annual award to a senior or graduate student considered by faculty to have the greatest potential for graduate study, who is pursuing higher education in economics. Because the Department of Economics does not have a doctoral program, the recipient can be a senior or graduate student accepted in a doctoral program at another institution.

The Martin and Rhoda Farris Scholarship in Economics was established in 1986 by Dr. and Mrs. Farris.  Dr. Farris received his bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from The University of Montana, and his doctorate, also in economics, from Ohio State University.  He worked as a professor at UM, OSU, and the University of Hawaii-Manoa, before moving to Arizona State University in 1957.  His specialty was the economics of transportation.

Henry & Fannie Clift Kain and Daniel & Jessie McKay Scholarship

The Kain-McKay Scholarship fund was established a number of years ago to provide scholarship support for students majoring in the social sciences.  A portion of this fund is available to an Economics major who will be a full-time UM student throughout the academic year of the award.

Louis F. Kinney

The Louis F. Kinney scholarship, a new scholarship in 2008, provides an award to a senior majoring in economics who is a Montana resident from a community with a population of 10,000 or fewer residents.

David R. Paoli and Monica Conrad Paoli Economics Opportunity Fund

The David R. Paoli and Monica Conrad Paoli Economics Opportunity Fund, established in 1999, provides financial support for a major in the University of Montana Economics program.  Preference is given to the most talented majors who are successful in the undergraduate program and interested in the five-year BA/MA program.

J.H.T. Ryman Economics Fellowship

In 1926, J.H.T. Ryman established an endowed fellowship fund to encourage University of Montana graduates to pursue graduate work in Economics. The award is given to a graduate entering an economics graduate program in a university of recognized standing.

Swenson and Wicks Scholarship in Economics

The Swenson and Wicks Scholarship provides funding to a deserving student in the graduate program in economics (preference is given to Montana residents). The recipient must be admitted to the Economics graduate program and demonstrate strong interest in and potential as an empirical economics researcher.
