Prospective Creative Writing Students

All application packets must be complete and postmarked by Wednesday, January 3, 2007 (if necessary, letters of recommendation may arrive under separate cover). Send application packets to:

Department of English, LA 133
University of Montana
Missoula, MT 59812
Attn: Karen Sturm

The M.F.A. program does not offer admission for study beginning Spring or Summer Semester.

When applying for the M.F.A. Program, please specify either Prose or Poetry. The required writing samples are:

Poetry: 15 pages

Prose: 15-25 pages (two short stories, parts of a novel, or two non-fiction essays)

The page numbers suggested are approximations, not a strict guideline. You may apply for a combined program, but your chances for acceptance increase if you select a single area.

If you have published, be sure and send a list of publication information in your application packet.

Take the GRE Test no later than December so that your scores will be available to us by mid-January of your application year. The requisite GRE codes are: 4489 (for the English Department) and 2503 (for the Creative Writing Program).

The Department of English only accepts complete application packets: application form, $45 fee (check made payable to The University of Montana), goal statement, GRE scores, official transcripts of each institution listed on the front of the application, at least 3 recommendations, and appropriate writing sample. If you so choose, include the Teaching Assistant application with an expository writing sample (see Teaching Assistant Applications under general application guidelines below).

Be sure and see the general application guidelines below.
