Creative Writing Scholarships

RICHARD HUGO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Richard Hugo Memorial Scholarship was established in 1984 to honor the memory and the work of poet Richard Hugo, whose character and personality shaped a strong and unusual creative writing program at The University of Montana. The scholarship is solely for graduate students accepted in the Master of Fine Arts Program in poetry at the University of Montana. Preference will be given to Montana residents.

No application is necessary for this scholarship. To be considered, students must first be accepted to the MFA Program in poetry at the University of Montana. Poems submitted for MFA application will then automatically be considered for the Hugo Memorial Scholarship by the Advisory Committee. Announcement of the scholarship recipient will be made by June 1 of each year. Address any inquiries about the scholarship to the attention of:

BERTHA MORTON FELLOWSHIPS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Campus-wide awards, chosen by the University Graduate Council each spring from program nominations. Fellowship $5,000, Scholarship $3,000. Criteria for nomination include: honors and awards; professional credentials; research and academic achievements; creative activities (especially publication of creative work). The deadline for applying is February 22 at 5 p.m.

 


 

THE MERRIAM-FRONTIER AWARD

Established by H.G. Merriam, Professor Emeritus of English, to recognize distinguished achievement in writing. The award consists of a prize of $500 and funds to publish a chapbook of the winning entry. Open to both graduate and undergraduate students, entries are called for early in the fall semester and judged by a committee of local writers. The student selected for the Merriam-Frontier Award gives a reading spring semester from his or her winning manuscript.

 


 

GRETA WROLSTAD TRAVEL AWARD

The Greta Wrolstad Travel Award was established in 2005, in memory of Greta Wrolstad, a poet in the MFA program from 2004-2005, who passed away on August 9, 2005 at the age of twenty-four. The award is granted to an outstanding poet in the first or second year of the MFA program in the Creative Writing Program at The University of Montana, for support of travel during the summer or academic year to a writing workshop, conference, or residency in the U.S. or abroad. The award consists of a prize of $1000. The deadline for applying is Wednesday, February 22 at 5 p.m. Submit 3 poems, your curriculum vita, and a 1 - 2 page proposal for your project with an attached budget.

 


 

A.B. GUTHRIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

$700 awarded each spring as a scholarship for the following year to an outstanding graduate student. Chosen by the creative writing faculty.

 


 

NETTIE WEBER SCHOLARSHIPS

Several awards of $300-$400, given to graduate or undergraduate students to offset the expense of attending a summer writing conference or workshop. The deadline for applying is Wednesday, February 22 at 5 p.m. Submit a writing sample (5 pages of poetry or a prose piece with a 25 page limit), a proposal and a budget of estimated expenses. Graduating and returning students are both eligible for this scholarship.

 


 

GOEDICKE/ROBINSON SCHOLARSHIP

$2,600 scholarship for the following year awarded to a deserving graduate student in poetry. Chosen by the creative writing faculty.

 


 

THE BEEBE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

$400 scholarship for the following year awarded to an outstanding undergraduate in creative writing. Chosen by the creative writing faculty.

 


 

JAMES P.  WELCH JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

$1,000 scholarship for the following year awarded to an outstanding undergraduate in creative writing. Chosen by the creative writing faculty.

 


 

OPUS SCHOLARSHIP

$1,000 scholarship for the following year awarded to an outstanding undergraduate in creative writing. Chosen by the creative writing faculty.
