Creative Writing Scholarships

Richard Hugo Memorial Scholarship

The Richard Hugo Memorial Scholarship was established in 1984 to honor the memory and the work of poet Richard Hugo, whose character and personality shaped a strong and unusual creative writing program at the University of Montana. The scholarship is solely for graduate students accepted in the Master of Fine Arts Program in poetry at the University of Montana. Preference will be given to Montana residents.

No application is necessary for this scholarship. To be considered, students must first be accepted for the MFA Program in poetry at the University of Montana. Poems submitted for MFA application will then automatically be considered for the Hugo Memorial Scholarship by the Advisory Committee. Deadline for the MFA application, in order to be considered for the scholarship, is February 1 of the year of application.

Announcement of the scholarship recipient will be made by June 1 of each year.
