Professor; PhD, New York University (1982). Twentieth-Century American Literature and Critical Theory. Author of Uncommon Readers: Denis Donoghue, Frank Kermode, George Steiner and the Tradition of the Common Reader (University of Toronto Press, 2003); Hints and Guesses: William Gaddis’s Fiction of Longing (University of Wisconsin Press, 1997); The Patient Particulars: American Modernism and the Technique of Originality (Bucknell University Press, 1995). Other writings have appeared in American Literary History; Contemporary Literature; Q/W/E/R/T/Y; The Dictionary of Literary Biography; CLIO: The Journal of Literature, History, and the Philosophy of History; Literature/Film Quarterly; Religion and Literature; Electronic Book Review; The Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Criticism and Theory; American Literature; Mosaic: A Journal for the Interdisciplinary Study of Literature; Modern Language Studies; American Studies (Warsaw); Studies in Short Fiction; The Journal of Value Inquiry; Film Criticism; In Recognition of William Gaddis: A Collection of Critical Essays (Syracuse University Press); and Marianne Moore: Woman and Poet (The National Poetry Foundation/University of Maine Press).
