The University of Montana Environmental Studies program is a diverse, interdisciplinary program that focuses on the concepts of social change and important environmental topics and issues.

The program offers a B.A. and an M.S. with multiple focus areas possible in each.

  • Hope Radford (EVST minor) received a Udall Scholarship
  • Corey Bressler received Honorable Mention for the Udall Scholarship
  • Rebecca Collins won the inaugural Phi Beta Kappa Essay contest
  • David Schaad won an Outstanding Presentation Award for his UMCUR presentation on Environmental Justice in Chile
  • Sara Anderson won 3rd place in the Missoula Public Library essay contest

Since 2003, the Wild Mercy Reading Series, sponsored by the Environmental Studies Department, Camas Magazine and UM FLAT, has highlighted some of the finest writers and student voices in Missoula's burgeoning environmental writing scene. Over the past few years, the UM FLAT has hosted these readings in our studio. For eight consecutive weeks this spring, two writers got up in front of a crowd of 30-60 people to read their work-stories, poetry, and music. Read more...

Wild Mercy Stories Captivate Audience

Wild Mercy is the annual reading series of the University of Montana's Environmental Studies program, featuring current students, program alumni, and visiting writers. 2014, Wild Mercy's 11th season, was its third at the UM FLAT, a student-run community space in Missoula. Environmental Studies Student receives Organic Crop Scholarship

Ellie Costello, EVST graduate student, has been awarded a Research and Education Scholarship from the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA) for her research on plant breeders' views producing widely-available, diverse seed for organic farmers today and tomorrow.

Environmental Studies student publishes guide to invasive species

Jen McBride designed a pocket guide to Aquatic Invasive Species threatening the Crown of the Continent in collaboration with the Crown Managers Partnership. The guide was distributed to land managers throughout the region. See the guide here.
