 GREYWATER WORKSHOPS in MISSOULA-- Recycled bath and laundry water (known as greywater) can irrigate home gardens and orchards. Learn how to build simple, low-cost systems that can increase your backyard harvest, protect the aquifer, and lower your water bill. 
WHEN: July 5, 10 am to 3 pm-- Laundry direct greywater installation workshop
This system uses washing machines internal pump to move greywater across flat sites.
Participants will learn design principles, basic plumbing skills, infiltration strategies, and how to integrate greywater and rainwater harvesting systems.
Cost (includes lunch): $20-$50 sliding scale, with a 20 % discount on second workshop (July 18). Workshops require  10 participants to run, and space is limited, so sign up now!

Eco-Farm Tour - sponsored by AERO. WHEN: 1 - 4 pm. WHERE: Home Acres Orchard. 839 Groff Lane, Stevensville.  Reserve your space by calling AERO office in Helena, 406/443-7272, Limit 50.  Orchard includes 18 varieties of apple, pear, apricot, berries, plums. Orchards are usually monoculture, but these farmers try to maintain a rich and diverse understory that encourages a strong population of beneficial insects, which in turn helps to maintain a natural ecological balance in the orchard. Plantings include clovers, medics, grasses, wildflowers and herbs and wildlife plantings for birds.

Understanding River Channel Migration—An educational presentation on how rivers move over time, why this is important to river health, and how understanding channel migration helps us protect rivers, lives and property. MT Water Policy Interim Committee (WPIC), created by Senate Bill No. 22 in the 2009 legislative session, will hold its first meeting on July 9 at 9 a.m. in room 172 of the capitol. WPIC will decide what issues to discuss and how to allocate staff and committee resources toward resolving those issues. An agenda and other meeting information is available on the WPIC website at leg.mt.gov/water. New this interim, and also available on the committee's website, is an audio guide to the work of the WPIC. The aim of this new feature, "Water World", is to provide another way for interested Montanans to follow and participate in the committee's work.

4th Annual Bitterroot Floating Weed Pull. Volunteers float Bitterroot River from Darby Bridge to Wally Crawford Fishing Access pulling noxious weeds along the way.  Volunteers meet at Wally Crawford between 8 and 8:45 to catch the shuttle to the Darby Bridge so float can begin at 9 am and finish by 3 pm, followed by a BBQ and prize drawing (sponsors Ravalli County Weed Districy & USFS). TRAIL MONITORING WORKSHOP - one-day workshop featuring Tim Peterson from Great Old Broads for Wilderness, Durango, CO. Phil Knight, Montanans for Quiet Recreation Coordinator, will be signing people up for monitoring trips, and MQR will loan digital cameras and GPS locators to those who dont have them. If you DO, please bring them.  We'll learn to document abuse from off-road vehicles in key areas on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forests. This information will be used to support trail protections during Forest Service actions, and also to educate citizens and local officials in order to help protect our public lands. Old Growth Western Red-Cedars & Fishing, Great Burn Backpack -- Just 30 miles west of Missoula lies the famed Great Burn Roadless Area. In addition to jagged granite peaks and expansive sub-alpine meadows, hidden pockets of ancient western red-cedar, spared by the great fire of 1910, remain in several drainages. Some of these giants are more than 500 years old! An easy 10 mile (round-trip) overnight backpack up the west fork of Fish Creek. Anglers, bring your fly rod. Space is limited. Alpine Artisans and the Swan Ecosystem Center have joined hands as co‐producers of the 2nd annual “Crown of the Continent” celebration at the beautiful Mercer Ranch in the heart of the
Swan Valley. This fund raising event features a steak pitchfork fondue, Drum Brothers, and silent and live auctions of artwork and outdoor experiences guided by area guides. Ninemile Watershed Restoration Day. at Little McCormick Creek (a tributary of Ninemile Creek) northwest of Missoula. Help collect fish and invertebrate data, install erosion controls, pull weeds, and rescue plants in key trout habitat. Great Burn Backpack, Fishing & Service Outing. Enjoy the high country of the Great Burn and help clean up lakeshore campsites. This trip takes you to Cedar Log Lakes on the Montana side of the Bitterroot divide. The trail winds along the divide in and out of Idaho, past Kid Lake to Upper Cedar Log Lake. Indian paintbrush, beargrass, hemlock, sub-alpine fir, moose, bears, and wolves. Bring your rod and MT fishing license. Plan to spend time packing up trash and cleaning up heavily-used campsites. Mondays

Missoula Conservation District --Regulates projects that disturb streams, undertakes conservation projects (including education & restoration work). WHEN: 2nd Monday of each month, 7-9pm. 5 Valleys Audubon has many Saturday field trips.

Community folk dances sponsored by Missoula Folklore Society. WHEN: first & third Saturdays, Oct to May, 7:30-11pm. WHERE: usually Union Hall, 208 Main St. Missoula.

Clark Fork River Market WHEN: Saturdays from May to October, 8 am to 1 pm. WHERE: near Caras Park, between Higgins Street bridge, the Millennium Bldg, and the river in downtown Missoula. Features LOCAL produce, meat, poultry, dairy, flowers, plants, commercial food vendors, value added products, and crafts made predominantly from agricultural products. There is space for weekly demo's on cooking, composting, gardening, whatever. Contact 542-0539.

The historic Moon-Randolph Homestead, part of Missoula’s Open Space System, is open Saturdays from 11 am-5 pm, from May through October (fire danger and weather permitting).  Visitors can picnic in the apple orchard, check out funky artifacts, take an historic tour or nap under the trees.

Missoula Prairiekeepers invite you to help with Grassland Restoration (Apr-Sept)

Montana Natural History Center is open Saturdays noon-4pm. Admission: $1 adults, $0.50 kids. Kids Activities, 2 pm Saturdays.  Free with admission. Children must be with an adult.  Programs about 1.5 hours.  Great for kids ages 5 and older, unless otherwise noted.  Also open Tues-Fri from noon-5pm. Call 327-0405.

Volunteer for Bitterroot Wilderness this Summer! Explore the Sapphire & Blue Joint Wilderness Study Areas in the Bitterroot National Forest and contribute to the conservation of this unique area. Volunteers will work with experienced leaders to map and monitor weeds and wilderness character, and inventory campsites.  Join us for 3-5 day backpacking trips and help conserve these unique Wilderness Study Areas.  Learn about invasive species, native plants, monitoring methods, and the natural history of the Sapphire and Blue Joint Areas.  Backcountry experience is helpful but not necessary. Dinners are provided and transportation is available from Missoula. International Wildlife Film Festival/Media Center showcases great wildlife films & art and those who make them. Shows start at 1:30 pm on Saturday & Sunday at the Roxy Theater, 718 S. Higgins Avenue, Missoula. Saturdays feature children's films, and Sundays feature winning films from past festivals. $4 adults, $3 students/seniors, $2 for kids under 13.

PROTECT & ENJOY THE ROCKIES ON WILDERNESS TRIPS WITH GREAT BURN
Volunteers needed for summer field projects.
