Fall 2010 Master Naturalist Course starts. WHEN:  Tuesday & Thursday evenings, Sept. 7 - Oct. 14, 4-7pm. WHERE: Montana Natural History Center, 120 Hickory St. Msl; Cost:  $295 -- $50 deposit required at registration. Back by popular demand, MNHC is offering a Master Naturalist course led by staff Naturalist Alyssa McLean.  This six-week course is every Tuesday and Thursday evening, from September 7 to October 14, plus 3 full-day Saturday field trips.

UM's Sustainability Lecture Series continues with a panel on Missoula Mayor Engen's Best Place Development plan. The panel discusses how to make sustainability a cornerstone of Missoula's development planning. The final meeting of the 2009-10 interim Water Policy Committee will be held in the State Capitol, Room 172, Sept 8-9. Audubon's Arctic Ocean Wildlife Conservation research -- a slide show by Melanie Smith, Audubon Alaska's staff biologist. The presentation tells the story of Arctic Ocean natural history and ecology through maps, photos, and video, painting a picture of a dynamic, thriving place that is one of our nation's last great frontiers. World's Largest Garage Sale. WHEN: Sept 18, 9am to 1:30pm; WHERE: UM's covered parking garage. Recycle your stuff. For $20, vendors are assigned two parking spaces, each 9 feet by 18 feet. 10.10.10 Event - Building a Green Home - 2-day Workshop & Root Food Dinner - - In conjunction with 350.org's Global Work Party on 10-10-10 in thousands of communities all over the world, each creating their own solutions to the climate crisis.  Sustainable Living Systems in the Bitterroot demos living in shelters with the lowest ecological footprint possible, using simple, off-the-grid energy systems, and using building materials considered waste in this society.  
Workshop:
Sat. & Sun., Oct. 9 &10, 9am to 4pm.  Cost:  $100, includes 2 lunches.  $120 if camping.  Location:  Langford Ranch on Big Ck, just N. of Victor, MT. Missoula Conservation District --Regulates projects that disturb streams, undertakes conservation projects (including education & restoration work). WHEN: 2nd Monday of each month, 7-9pm. Montana Native Plant Society works to restore the Toole Native Prairie on the south side of the Clark Fork River just east of Higgins Bridge in Missoula. All welcome. WHEN: 6:30pm til dusk. 1000 New Gardens  group meets Tuesdays at 5pm in UM's University Center room 222, because they have a lot of digging to do to put in 1000 new gardens in Missoula in the next 5 years. If you can dig it, email 1000 New Gardens  or call 214-6664

5 Valleys Audubon field trips many Saturdays.

Clark Fork River Market WHEN: Saturdays from May to October, 8 am to 1 pm. WHERE: near Caras Park, between Higgins Street bridge, the Millennium Bldg, and the river in downtown Missoula. Features LOCAL produce, meat, poultry, dairy, flowers, plants, commercial food vendors, value added products, and crafts made predominantly from agricultural products. There is space for weekly demo's on cooking, composting, gardening, whatever. Contact 542-0539.

The historic Moon-Randolph Homestead, part of Missoula’s Open Space System, is open Saturdays from 11 am-5 pm, from May through October (fire danger and weather permitting).  Visitors can picnic in the apple orchard, check out funky artifacts, take an historic tour or nap under the trees. 

Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge tours --some Saturdays (weather permitting) 9 a.m. – 12 noon

Missoula Prairiekeepers invite you to help with Grassland Restoration (Apr-Sept)

Montana Natural History Center is open Saturdays noon-4pm. Admission: $1 adults, $0.50 kids. Kids Activities, 2 pm Saturdays.  Free with admission. Children must be with an adult.  Programs about 1.5 hours.  Great for kids ages 5 and older, unless otherwise noted.  Also open Tues-Fri from noon-5pm. Call 327-0405.
