Position Announcements 

The Department of Geography at The University of Montana invites applications for a tenure track position in Cartography and Geographic Information Science at the Assistant Professor level to start August, 2012. Applicants must possess a strong record of research and teaching and have a Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related field.

The successful candidate will teach upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses in cartography, vector GIS, and other courses in his or her area of specialization.  The ability to teach Internet mapping and spatial statistics would be of advantage.  We seek candidates who are interested in student engagement programs such as internships, study abroad, service learning, field experiences, and collaborative student-faculty research. He/she will also be expected to provide support to the University’s interdisciplinary Certificate in GIScience and Technology.  Excellent communication skills are required.

Particular importance is attached to research interests that complement the department’s existing strengths in GIS, human-environment interactions, mountain geography, rural geography, and water resources. A willingness to engage in collaborative research with departmental faculty and colleagues in other UM programs is expected.  Substantive international experience is preferred.

Additional responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate advising, conducting professional research and publishing in scholarly outlets.   The candidate will also provide service to the university, the community, and the state of Montana.  Missoula is a dynamic community of 67,000 people in western Montana’s northern Rocky Mountains that provides ready access to numerous wilderness and outdoor activities.
