Course Overview: This course will introduce teachers to the cultural history of north-central Montana, including the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation and surrounding area. We will examine the history of Native American people as recorded in the Holocene archaeological record and historic documents, as well as modern social and economic conditions. A goal will be to better understand the influence of European settlement and environmental change on native peoples of the region. We will begin on Monday afternoon with a series of lectures designed to provide context for field excursions over the following two days. As part of the field-based activities, participants will work in small groups to gather and organize information on specific sites. They will then present their information as placemarks within a Google Earth “tour” documenting the week’s activities and learning outcomes.
