Cultural & Global Competence in the Department of Geography

Building cultural and global competence is part of the curriculum in the Department of Geography. More and more jobs today require cultural and global competence. Since fall 2005 Multicultural Learning Solutions (MLS) offers courses in the Department of Geography that meet the challenges of today's changing workplace which demands the need for international and multicultural knowledge and skill development. Graduates from The University of Montana who have this valuable competence, in general have access to a wider variety of jobs, nationally and internationally, typically earn more money and receive higher benefits.

MLS Cultural and Global Competence courses explore behavior, values, traditions, customs, stereotypes, taboos, communication differences, work ethic, gender issues, etiquette and more in cultures within the United States and abroad, and offer intellectual tools for understanding and dealing with cultural diversity. These courses are an ideal way to prepare students as they interact in a fast-changing world, influenced by increasing intercultural contact.

MLS Cultural and Global Competence courses are 3-credit, semester long courses, offered each fall and spring semester in the Department of Geography. Classes are highly interactive and feature online course components. For Geography majors, MLS courses count as upper-division courses in the section Geography and Society. For students not majoring in Geography, they count as upper-division electives.
