    • Artifact ID #: 0129
    • Excavation Unit: Locality 19, Cabin
    • Level: 30cmbs
    • Identification: Iron Chinese cleaver with 7 ½” blade, missing handle. This artifact reflects butchering activity at German Gulch, and the use of a Chinese blade suggests that these immigrants preferred their own tools for the job. Archaeologists at other sites in Idaho and California have noted that animal remains from Chinese camps have different patterns of butchering than Euro-American sites, which indicates both a difference in the desired cuts of meat but also the use of differently sized and shaped tools. Analysis of the animal bones would likely show further evidence of differently butchered meats at German Gulch between the Chinese and non-Chinese settlements.
