- Artifact ID #: 0155
- Excavation Unit: Locality 30
- Level: Unknown
- Identification: Chinese brown-glazed stoneware, broken spout from a spouted jar. Perhaps the most recognizable of the Chinese utility pottery is the spouted jar, commonly called a soy pot. Produced by potters in China for over 2,000 years, the spouted jar held a wide variety of liquids including soy sauce and vegetable oil. There were no distributors of soy sauce in the United States during the 1800s, leading to the importation of this common cooking ingredient. In addition, the pottery was re-used after it was emptied for a myriad of purposes including storage of dry goods, drinking water vessel, and even sometimes modified into an opium pipe. Unfortunately, this pot’s long production in China can not allow firm dating of the artifact.
