- Artifact ID #: 1119
- Excavation Unit: 2N 13W
- Level: 0-10cmbs
- Identification: Rolled brass dipper or sauce pan handle which broke at the rivet attachment. This handle relates to a type of brass or copper pan that was used for melting items such as chocolate, jams, or a variety of sauces and then poured into another can or jar or serving dish. In its original form the copper pan would have a spout on one of the two sides adjacent to the handle for easy pouring. The handle, and pan, likely dates before the 1890s due to its brass construction, as after this time aluminum became more popular for kitchen pots and pans. As the pan was not found with the handle, it is likely the Chinese kept it for other purposes.
