    • Identification: Unglazed earthenware Chinese food jar lid. Reconstructed from two fragments, this lid relates to a Chinese brown–glazed wide–mouthed jar. Wide–mouthed jars held a variety of dry and liquid goods imported from China. This ceramic lid would have sit on top of the food jar, and then sealed with a mass of wet clay or paper. It is uncommon to find intact lids, as they were oftentimes broken during the opening of the jars. This lid likely relates to one of the food jars found in and around this unit, and suggests that the contents of the jar were used as soon as it was opened.
