Liberal Studies with a General Humanities Option

Upper-Division Requirements

(General Humanities program only. Please visit Religious Studies, Asian Studies or Women's and Gender Studies option requirements.)

In addition to the Liberal Studies lower-division requirements, students complete upper-division requirements the following categories.

  • History, 3 credits
  • Philosophy or Political Science, 3 credits
  • Women’s and Gender Studies, or Native American Studies, or African-American Studies, 3 credits
  • Religious Studies, 6 credits
  • Liberal Studies, 6 credits
    • (from among LS 326, LS 327, LS 368, LS 428)
  • Liberal Studies Capstone Senior Seminar, 3 credits

One upper division course must satisfy the General Education Upper Division Writing Requirement. Please refer to your governing UM catalog for a list of Upper Division Writing Courses.

The University of Montana requires 39 upper division credits for graduation. The University of Montana requires 120 total credits for graduation.

Candidates for High Honors should consult the Director of Liberal Studies early in the fall semester of the year of intended graduation so that the examination committee can be constituted. Candidates for High Honors in Liberal Studies must pass an oral examination, given by a committee of Liberal Studies faculty, on a topic of their choice. The candidate should prepare a ten or fifteen minute presentation on this topic and then stand for questions. Candidates who perform well on the High Honors exam make a thoughtful and articulate presentation and field questions well. The exam should occupy an hour.
