ITAL 101, Elementary Italian I

U 101 Elementary Italian I 5 cr. Offered autumn. An introduction to Italian languages and culture, with emphasis on skills of reading, writing, and comprehension, and speaking.
This course is the first semester of Italian language and culture courses.

  • In this course you will:
  • work individually, in pairs, and in groups.
  • learn to read, write, speak, and understand Italian
  • learn to communicate in different real-life situations
  • be introduced to the present and past tenses
  • be expected to complete daily homework.

ITAL 102, Elementary Italian II (second semester)

U 102 Elementary Italian II 5 cr. Offered spring. Prereq., ITAL 101. Continuation of ITAL 101.

  • In this course you will:
  • continue to expand your capabilities of communicating in Italian
  • add vocabulary and new verb tenses to your repertoire
  • continue to explore Italy's culture
  • participate frequently in class, practicing the material in pairs and in small groups
  • be expected to complete daily homework.

ITAL 201 Intermediate Italian I (third semester)

U 201 Intermediate Italian I 4 cr. Offered autumn. Prereq., ITAL 102 or equiv. Expansion of active skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, plus further cultural analysis.

  • In this course you will:
  • concentrate on mastering previously learned grammar concepts
  • increase your vocabulary
  • continue to read, write, speak, and listen to current Italian
  • choose a topic for a written and spoken cultural presentation
  • view Italian films.

ITAL 202, Intermediate Italian II (fourth semester)

U 202 Intermediate Italian 4 cr. Offered spring. Prereq., ITAL 201 or equiv. Continuation of ITAL 201.

  • In this course you will:
  • concentrate on mastering previously learned grammar concepts
  • increase your vocabulary
  • continue to read, write, speak, and listen to Italian
  • choose a topic for a written and spoken cultural presentation
  • view Italian films

U 391 Special Topics 3 cr. Offered intermittently. Experimental offerings of visiting professors, experimental offerings of new courses, or one-time offerings of current topics.
