Russian Section's Annual Participation in National Essay Contest:
UM students of Russian have participated in the competitive Annual ACTR National Post-Secondary Russian Essay contest since 2004. We are proud of the many students we have nominated for participation in this event and particularly proud of the numerous students who have won silver and bronze medals, as well as honorable mentions.

Russian Studies Program Guest Scholars:
Over the past four years we have invited the following Russian scholars to campus to give a presentation and meet with students. Support for this was generously provided by the Office off International Programs.

2013 Dr. Thomas Seifrid (UM alumnus) (The University of Southern California) Lectured on “The Paradox of Tolstoyan Interiority.” Author of books on the author Andrei Platonov and the on philosophy of language.

2012 Dr. Anna Kuxhausen (St. Olaf’s College in Minnesota) Lectured on 18th-century medical history, From the Womb to the Body Politic: Raising the Nation in Enlightenment Russia (Univ. of Wisc. Press, 2012).

2011 Dr. Stephen Norris (Miami University in Ohio) Lectured on a Russian film called The 9th Company about the war in Afghanistan, based on research for his book Blockbuster History in the New Russia: Movies, Memory, and Patriotism (Indiana University Press, 2012).

2010 Dr. Andrew Jenks (California State University at Long Beach) Lectured on the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, about whom he has authored the book, The Cosmonaut Who Couldn't Stop Smiling: The Life and Legend of Yuri Gagarin (Northern Illinois University Press, 2012).
