October/November 2007 Press Release
Udo Fluck, Director of Multicultural Learning Solutions (MLS) and faculty member in the Department of Geography will expand his global and cultural competence training by developing a series of workshops for the City of Missoula. A meeting involving Mayor Engen, key city administrators, and Dr. Fluck resulted in an agreement to offer a sequence of global awareness training sessions for city employees in 2008. The first cycle of tailored workshops will be designed for law enforcement, parks and recreation, and supervisors.
This is a wonderful outreach and growth opportunity for MLS, a program that started with only 10 students in the autumn of 2005 at The University of Montana. Currently, over 200 students are enrolled in a variety of cultural and global competence courses at UM, courses taught exclusively by Dr. Fluck. In addition to the rapid growth of MLS, Dr. Fluck’s efforts have yielded several awards and other forms of recognition from UM administrators, colleagues, and students. Fluck, a native German, has worked as a curriculum developer, consultant, and instructor in international competence management in Germany and at The University of Montana for over seven years.
Parallel to the success of semester-long courses offered through the School of Business Administration, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Honors College, MLS has expanded its training mission continuously during the last two years to include pre-departure workshops for students enrolled in study abroad programs; for international students; as part of new-student orientation; and for a variety of campus student groups and associations. MLS also offers evening presentations for the Missoula community, hosted by the Missoula International Friendship Program (MIFP) and has served as a staple in UM’s Human Resource Career Development Program (CDP) since 2005, with a series of popular workshops for UM faculty, administrators, and staff members.
Although the academic year is well advanced, MLS’s extracurricular activities have really just begun. Upcoming presentations conducted by Dr. Fluck include workshops in UM’s Day of Dialogue, the MIFP Fall 2007 Community Event, Military Sciences courses offered through ROTC, and the Model Arab League.
For further information on dates, times, and location of MLS fall presentations, please contact the MLS office, Department of Geography, Old Journalism Building 207, telephone: 243.5885.
