Mission Statement

The mission of the Native American Studies Department is to teach critical skills of writing, research, communication, and analysis which focus on the subject matter of American Indian history, literature, ecological views, language, spiritual belief systems, philosophy and contemporary concerns; and to teach about cultural diversity from the perspective of indigenous people of this country. In addition to the primary academic components related to teaching and research, the department takes as part of its mission to mentor and support NAS majors and minors as well as Native American students outside the major. NAS works with Native American communities and organizations (on and off campus) as requested when appropriate.
