As I am a programmer and not a designer, most of my work at Spectral Fusion is either on not-so-pretty forms or code that is invisible to users. I do very little design these days, so I have very little to show that is visually pleasing, but there are a few examples of my work below. Unfortunately, much of my work is on password-protected portions of sites, so it is impossible to browse to my work directly. On most sites, however, my work directly affects what is displayed elsewhere on the site. For example, a site may have a password-protected administrative section where the department/organization running the site can manage news and events that might be displayed on their homepage.

The Sites

UM College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)

  • College of Arts and Sciences

  • College of Arts and Sciences Administrative Section
    CAS Administrative Section

For the CAS site I did most of the administrative programming, which included allowing CAS faculty and staff to manage events, news, dates/deadlines, and articles, and for Spectral Fusion employees to update the featured faculty, students, and alumni that appear in the "CAS Spotlight" on the front page. The project required a fairly large Microsoft SQL database to hold data for each section. I also did the programming to randomize the articles that appear on the right side of certain pages. The site design was changed shortly after I finished working on the original, but most of my code is still in use for the administrative section of the site. Fellow programmer Craig McNinch helped with some of the programming and adapted some of the code for the new design.

This site is nearing completion. It was designed both to replace the existing UMPC website and to replace the current collections management system, allowing UMPC staff to manage specimens, specimen loans, collector information, locality information, and other information regarding the physical paleontology collections, all without having to be near the collection (or even on campus). It was also created to allow the public to browse or search the collections online, and for other institutions to request loans of specific specimens. This was the first site I worked on requiring its own complete search engine, which was quite the endeavor! It was also the first site on which I did all of the programming, from the search and browse pages to the management section. I am still adding some features, but I am satisfied with much of the work done so far. This site was built using Adobe Coldfusion, and uses many features of Adobe's Spry frameword for AJAX, allowing easy changes to be made by staff without needing to reload many of the pages.

We did a redesign of the site for KBGA 89.9 FM, the campus radio station here at UM. I was responsible for creating the online DJ application and letting the existing DJs create an online profile. I also created the listener request form and programmed the review page. Most of the code that runs behind the scenes allowing the KBGA staff to update the site is also mine.

    Managing Homeschool Reports

Ravalli County, neighboring Missoula County to the south, has been a long-time client of Spectral Fusion. It is one of the few sites that is always considered "in progress," as we are frequently adding new features to make certain tasks easier for the County's residents. Although I have helped with a few parts of the site before, I recently had a chance to become more involved in the site. My first contribution was a form that allows parents who wish to home school their children the ability to file a home school report online. We later added an online interface for the superintendant to review these reports and make any necessary changes. I am told that this is one of the first county websites in Montana to offer this functionality.

My next contribution to the Ravalli County website was an area to allow residents to view PDFs of correspondence letters sent to the county commissioners. This section of the site was featured in the Ravalli Republic in April of 2008, and allows residents to review correspondence without having to go to the county courthouse. Unlike much of what I do at Spectral Fusion, this work is publically available.
