Teresa Sobieszczyk, Assistant Professor of Sociology, teaches classes in population studies, international development, international migration, and qualitative research methods. At present, one of her courses is cross-listed with Women's Studies: Sociology 370 (Social Change and Global Development). Other courses will be cross-listed in the future.
Professor Sobieszczyk specializes in gender issues related to population and development. Her research interests include fertility decision making in the Philippines, the ways that gender influences material, social, and physical well-being of the elderly in Southeast Asia, and the influence of gender on international labor recruitment and migration from Thailand. Some of her recent publications are "Couple Agreement Regarding Pregnancy Wantedness in the Philippines," "Pathways Abroad: Gender and International Migration Recruitment Choices in Northern Thailand," and "Gender and Well-Being among the Elderly: Evidence from Thailand." She is examining Thai women who use debt bondage to enter the sex trade in Japan and Singapore as a part of her on-going research.
Dr. Sobieszczyk is a new member of the Women's Studies faculty and the Steering Committee.
